THE CULTURE CORE PROGRAM

Supported by the City’s Department of Children, Youth and & their Families, CultureCore currently is led by the BRAVA THEATRE CENTER. As a participant of CultureCore over the decade, Chinese Cultural Productions has provided free in-school and after school enrichment in the form of traditional Chinese dance instruction to approximately 150 children each year at public schools in Chinatown and the Tenderloin neighborhoods. Serving the Chinese American community of San Francisco in particular, Chinese Cultural Productions currently provides quality Chinese dance workshops and weekly in-class dance instruction to children in San Francisco elementary schools, teaching and allowing all students to learn about and to express their Chinese dance heritage. CultureCore is open to children ages 6-17.

In CultureCore, students learn about Chinese heritage through culturally specific movements, costumes, music, expression and performances. Through the creative exploration of personal identity, students begin to have positive feelings about their own and other children's cultures. The under the management of Artistic Director Lily Cai and the teaching direction of 2-5 Company dancers --usually perform at the annual CultureCore Showcase in May, the Chinese New Year Celebration, the Chinatown Youth Festival or the San Francisco Youth Arts Festival. This provides an opportunity for student dancers to demonstrate their skills to their families, school and the broader community.
